Oops, You’ve Got Sun Damage

Manage, treat and reverse sun damaged skin with at home laser

Tan in haste, repent at leisure. Now that we’re deep into summer, amidst that spattering of charming freckles, you may also notice accumulated sun damage from all that basking. If so, you’re not alone: pigmentation is now the number one UK skin gripe, and irregular dark patches and uneven tone are widely considered more ageing than sagging skin.

Sun damage in its many forms is the most common concern seen in dermatology clinics, with over 80% of patients presenting with it.

Pigmentation is normal, but the real issue is hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage. Sun damage shows up as dark spots, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. Irregular brown patches on the face, chest or hands result from the skin overproducing melanin as a defensive move against UV exposure.

When it comes to sun damage, we’re repeat offenders

By now we know the dangers of sun exposure — so why do we still fall foul of overdoing it? Call it overexcitement or holiday mode, but we can’t resist soaking up every ray.

“It’s time to check in with your skin, see a dermatologist to ensure skin health, and reinstate proper sun barrier habits,” advises Katie Service, author of The Beauty Brief: An Insider's Guide to Skincare.

Top dermatologists echo the same advice. “Every dermatologist will tell you to stay out of the sun,” says Dr Dan Belkin MD, Double Board-Certified Dermatologist and Cosmetic Surgeon. “UV upregulates enzymes that break down your collagen. UV exposure increases matrix metalloproteinases — the enzymes that degrade collagen and elastic fibres, accelerating skin aging.”

Warning heeded. But what if avoiding the sun completely isn’t realistic?

Thankfully, one technology stands out to prevent, manage and reverse hyperpigmentation — suitable both in-clinic and at home.

Low-level laser therapy tackles hyperpigmentation and sun damage

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is advanced laser technology that interacts directly with skin cells, re-energizing their power centres without heat or damage.

“Because LLLT regulates melanocytes — pigment cells — it can reduce hyperpigmentation that develops with sun exposure,” explains Dr Belkin. “LLLT helps control melanosome distribution (pigment packets). Over-distribution causes summer brown spots and freckling. Low-level laser therapy, like the LYMA Laser, helps regulate melanocytes to fade hyperpigmentation.”

The LYMA Laser is engineered to fade pigmentation fast

The LYMA Laser uses near-infrared low-level laser therapy at 500mW — clinic-grade strength. Its uninterrupted beam penetrates beyond surface sun damage to melanocyte cells deep in the dermis, breaking up unwanted pigmentation. The dispersed pigment is naturally reabsorbed, leaving skin clearer and more luminous.

By boosting cellular energy, the LYMA Laser also firms and lifts, reducing sagging and restoring definition to contours often lost through sun damage. It’s safe for daily use.

Better still, the Laser builds long-term skin resilience, stocking up collagen and elastin in advance of sun exposure. As Dr Belkin notes: “Prevention is the cure — and that applies to cosmetic dermatology too.”

Experts trust the LYMA Laser for darker skin tones

“I treat many Indian and Arabic clients who experience strong sun exposure and need to address pigmentation fast,” says London-based facialist Nichola Joss, currently in residence with the LYMA Laser PRO at Harrods Wellness Clinic. “Traditional lasers like IPL aren’t safe for darker skin tones, so I use the LYMA Laser PRO. It’s pain-free, downtime-free, and powerful. We see results from significant improvement to full fading of discoloration.”

She adds: “It also works beautifully on yellow pigmentation that darker skin types develop, and even corrects scars left by failed clinic laser attempts.”

The LYMA Laser PRO uses identical LLLT to the handheld Laser, but with three beams for triple the power and surface coverage. This makes it ideal for larger body areas like chest, arms or legs. It’s even proven effective on cellulite, thread veins and broken capillaries.

Do your Laser work poolside, yachtside, or straight from your beach bed — it’s versatile rejuvenation without downtime.
