What are short-chain fatty acids and why do they matter?

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are produced when prebiotic fibre is fermented by gut bacteria. They are the primary fuel source for the cells lining your colon, and are associated with gut barrier function in peer-reviewed research.

You cannot produce them without adequate prebiotic fibre - and the average modern diet delivers less than half of what the body needs. Research also links them to energy levels and cognitive function.
