What are short-chain fatty acids and why do they matter?
Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are produced when prebiotic fibre is fermented by gut bacteria. They are the primary fuel source for the cells lining your colon. You cannot produce them without adequate prebiotic fibre - and the average modern diet delivers less than half of what the body needs. Research into their role in overall gut function is ongoing.
