Nichola Joss’s step-by-step guide to creating the ideal regime for glowing skin.
You’re looking to start a new skincare routine or optimise your existing ritual, but you have no idea where to start: which skincare products should you use? How do you know the products you’re choosing are right for your skin? Oil-based cleanser or gel-based? Do you need to supplement? Do you need to be using eye cream? How about serum? How often should you exfoliate? We could go on ad infinitum.
We asked Nichola Joss, one of the beauty industry’s most revered skincare experts, what her morning and evening beauty routines look like, and how we can replicate them ourselves at home. Nichola was voted the world’s leading facialist in 2019 and is the beauty therapist of choice for a host of a-list superstars including Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Swank, Gisele Bundchen and Gwyneth Paltrow, and in 2019 she was voted the best facialist in the world.
Below, Nichola lets us in on the secret to perfecting your morning and evening skincare routine and achieving that elusive, youthful glow. Nichola is inspiring and knowledgeable in equal measure and she is positively brimming with ideas as to how you can incorporate some of these rituals into your own regimen.
Morning ritual.
I start my morning beauty routine by using my Hayo’u body tapper all over my body. This helps to stimulate circulation, release overnight tension and sluggishness, improve my muscle tone and promote increased energy levels. This only takes a couple of minutes and gently awakens the system.
Next, I take a morning shot of Symprove; this is a live and active bacteria drink which helps to keep my gut microbiome and digestive system balanced and healthy.
Thirdly, with breakfast, I take my LYMA Supplement.
Finally, I start my skincare. I use a cleanser for sensitive skin gently massaged into my skin to wipe away sleep and gently cleanse and awaken my face. I spritz with a toner to add much needed pre- and probiotics onto my skin, to increase the health of my skin’s microbiome, and to strengthen the skin barrier whilst keeping the skin balanced. Then I apply my favourite serum. This product is designed to relax the muscles in a similar way to fillers but in a non invasive natural form and is great for anti-ageing when used alongside the LYMA Laser, Oxygen Mist and Gliding Serum (more on which later!).
After the serum has absorbed into my skin I like to do a quick awakening facial massage. At this point I’ll reach for a probiotic serum to flood my skin with good bacteria, keep my complexion balanced and combat fine lines and wrinkles. I’ll apply that to my face and then spend a couple of minutes massaging my face with my Hayo’u Rose Quartz massage tool. I always start massaging from the centre of my face working outwards and upwards, which not only opens up the face but activates the muscles and improves the contours and structure of the face. Facial massage is wonderful for lymphatic drainage and is a great way to relieve any tension and stress held in the muscles, and to banish dark circles.
I use a daytime eye cream to target the contours around my eyes. Using an eye cream can really tone and lift the eye area as well as address any fine lines and wrinkles. It’s important to invest in a high quality eye cream or to use an under eye wrinkle remover device if you want to improve the health of that delicate eye contour area.
Finally I moisturise, which gives daytime protection against pollutants and provides hydration as well as acting as a barrier between my skin and the environment. I lightly massage it into my skin before applying make-up. A good moisturiser is the only make-up base you need!
Evening routine.
I like to split my night time routine into two parts. Part one I do in the early evening and it includes both the Nourishing Cleansing Oil and the Clarifying Cleanser by Tata Harper. Double cleansing is a must. The Clarifying Cleanser is powdered with AHA & BHA’s for gentle exfoliation which I love. I then spritz with the Esse toner again and apply all my actives and serums. I apply a few drops Vintners Daughters Active Treatment Essence and then follow with a probiotic serum on top. I leave those products on for a couple of hours while I enjoy dinner and treat myself to some TV.
Closer to bedtime I do part two of my night time skincare routine. This involves using my LYMA Laser. The first step is spritzing with the Active Mist and then applying a generous amount of the LYMA Priming Serum. I then use the LYMA Laser, slowly gliding it along my neck and around my face, paying special attention to areas of skin that are discoloured, where there are deeper lines and where my scars are. I use the laser for around 15 minutes; it’s a real ritual for me as it’s incredibly relaxing and is something that helps me to wind down at the end of a busy day.
Finally, I do my nighttime facial massage routine, using Vintner's Daughter Active Botanical Serum. I finish my day with some calming breath work and then I'm ready for my beauty sleep.
