What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is often referred to as ‘the sunshine vitamin’ because your body produces it naturally in response to sunlight. It is, however, pretty challenging to get all the Vitamin D you need from sunlight synthesis alone, so most people will need to incorporate Vitamin D rich foods into their diet or supplement with Vitamin D to ensure they are getting enough.
Vitamin D3 in particular is a fat-soluble vitamin that is very difficult to obtain solely through sunlight and diet, and most people find they need to take a supplement. Vitamin D3 is fundamental for healthy calcium metabolism, and also plays a fundamental role in immune function . It has been suggested that less than adequate levels of Vitamin D3 in the blood may increase a person’s susceptibility to Covid-19.
Almost half of all people worldwide are deficient in Vitamin D3 and you may be particularly at risk if you are older, have dark skin, spend more time indoors than outdoors, or if you were breastfed as an infant.
If you are deficient in Vitamin D3 - as the majority of people living in the northern hemisphere are - you are at increased risk of developing a number of diseases, including coronavirus, and also of developing brittle bones and teeth.
1. Vitamin D boosts your immunity
Calcium absorption plays a fundamental role in the activation of the body’s immunity system in response to disease. There is only one way to effectively metabolise calcium and to ensure that it ends up reaching your white blood cells (the cells that are responsible for immune function): adequate intake of both Vitamin D3 and its partner-in-crime Vitamin K2. These two vitamins work together to promote calcium absorption and to maintain desirable levels of calcium in the blood, thereby augmenting your immune response.
For our purposes, it can be said that vitamin D3 is responsible for absorbing the calcium from the foods we eat and the supplements we take, and Vitamin K2 is in charge of transporting the calcium to the systems of the body that require it; in this instance to the immune system.
Heart disease, seasonal flu and multiple sclerosis are just some of the illnesses that vitamin D3 has been shown to protect against.
LYMA contains an optimised daily clinical dose of 75µg of MenaQ7® Matrix and 2,000 i.u. of Vita-Algae D3™ which work together to enhance your immune response.
2. Vitamin D helps keep your bones strong
Vitamins D3 and K2 also work in tandem to promote strong bones and healthy teeth, and to prevent brittleness from creeping in with age.
As above, Vitamin D3 plays the role of metaboliser, and Vitamin K2 directs the calcium to where it needs to go: the bones, teeth and musculoskeletal system.
LYMA provides a scientifically prescribed dose of 2,000 i.u. of Vita-Algae D3™ (as opposed to the standard dose of 600 i.u. found in many supplements), and MenaQ7® Matrix is the world’s most bioavailable form of vitamin K2. Both ingredients are fully patented and unrivalled on the supplement market.
3. Vitamin D improves your mood
Clinical studies suggest that Vitamin D plays an important role in regulating mood and in keeping depression at bay.
Researchers in Norway found that people with depression who started with Vitamin D supplements noticed an almost immediate improvement in their symptoms, and experienced an overall improved mood compared with a control group. Their findings were particularly significant in the case of overweight and obese participants. In fact, a second theory as to why Vitamin D3 is referred to as ‘the sunshine vitamin’ is because it makes you feel happy.
4. Vitamin D helps with weight management
According to one randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published by Cambridge University Press, Vitamin D3 is associated with appetite suppression in adults.
Another study of 218 overweight and obese women found that women who had adequate Vitamin D3 intake over a one year period experienced greater weight loss than those in a placebo group. All of the women were put on an identical calorie-restricted diet and prescribed an identical exercise routine over the course of the 12 month study, but those who fulfilled their Vitamin D3 intake lost an average of 7lbs (3.2kg) more than those in the placebo group.
Supplementing with Vitamin D3 has also been shown to reduce disease markers for weight-related illness such as heart disease and type two diabetes. Results were more significant still when participants took Vitamin D3 alongside a calcium supplement.
5. Vitamin D supports healthy pregnancy
Along with folate, iron, magnesium and omegas, Vitamin D3 is one of the most important supplements to take for a healthy pregnancy. Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy has been implicated in a number of areas including an increased risk of needing a cesarean section, of suffering preeclampsia, of enduring a preterm birth, and of contracting gestational diabetes.
Whilst the recommended daily dose of vitamin D3 during pregnancy was for a long time suggested to be 600 i.u., recent studies point to daily requirements being closer to the 2,000 i.u. formulated in LYMA. Vitamin D3 plays a fundamental role in aspects of health ranging from disease prevention to warding off osteoporosis, boosting your immune system and keeping your heart, lungs and brain healthy.
