Most hyaluronic acid never gets past the surface - molecular weight is why.
Hyaluronic acid's list of skin benefits is remarkable: plumping, firming, hydrating, holding up to 1,000 times its own weight in water. No wonder we've been inundated with hyaluronic face creams, hyaluronic serums and, more recently, even hyaluronic hair care. We cannot get enough of the stuff.
But many hyaluronic acid skincare formulations only deliver surface-level effects, rather than the deeper, longer-lasting benefits the best hyaluronic acid is capable of.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is not new. We might know it now as a skincare buzzword ingredient, but our bodies already manufacture it naturally as a vital component of skin. It's a gel-like network of sugar polysaccharides running through the body and skin, cushioning and lubricating connective tissue.
In fact, hyaluronic acid is arguably the most important substance in the science behind skincare that works - the extracellular matrix (ECM), the structural network that holds skin's cells in place. Unfortunately, production of this major water-retaining molecule slowly decreases from around age 25, causing skin to gradually become less plump and lose its firmness.
Where did the hyaluronic acid hype come from?
Hyaluronic acid skincare was catapulted into popularity following research into a gelatinous sweet potato eaten in a Japanese village called Yuzurihara. A widely reported study of the village found far higher numbers of people living beyond the age of 85 than the equivalent population average in North America.
Yuzurihara became known as 'the village of long life' - its older residents were reported to have remarkably smooth, wrinkle-free skin, flexible joints and full heads of hair well into old age, something researchers linked to a diet rich in sticky, hyaluronic-acid-boosting sweet potatoes.
The villagers were consuming hyaluronic acid through diet rather than applying it topically - but the finding supports a key principle: for hyaluronic acid to work as an effective anti-ager, it needs to get past skin's surface and be taken up by the skin itself.
What's the best hyaluronic acid?
There's a lot of jargon around active ingredients, with percentages thrown around everywhere - but the best hyaluronic acid for skin is the one your skin can actually use. For that, it needs to be efficiently absorbed into skin's outer layers, rather than sitting on the surface.
Large, high-molecular-weight HA molecules can't do this on their own. Hydrolysing hyaluronic acid down to a smaller molecular weight allows it to move past skin's outer barrier and be put to use in the layers beneath.
It's why the new Power Hydration Serum is built on a Triple Hyaluronic Acid System - three molecular weights working at three depths in a single formula, from an instant plumping effect at the surface to prolonged, deeper suppleness. The Power Youth Cream carries a 4-Weight Hyaluronic Acid System, adding a fourth, ultra-low weight that extends hydration further still. Used together, the two are designed to hydrate skin at multiple depths at once, rather than relying on a single molecular weight to do all the work. In early clinical testing, skin showed visible improvements in firmness, elasticity, radiance and texture from just 14 days.*
It's all in the system, not just the ingredient

Like any skincare, results depend on more than what's dissolved into a single ingredient - it's about what happens once hydration lands, and whether it's held onto or lost. LYMA's scientists built the new formula around that principle.
Alongside its two hyaluronic acid weights — an ultra-low weight HA that works within skin's deeper layers, and an acetylated HA for instant surface plumping — the Power Hydration Serum carries a Probiotic Protein, designed to help maintain skin's microbiome and support the epidermal lipid barrier, so the hydration the HA delivers doesn't simply evaporate. A targeted peptide delivery technology and 2% niacinamide work alongside it, visibly smoothing the look of fine lines and helping to support skin's appearance against everyday environmental stress (this isn't a substitute for a daily SPF).
The Power Youth Cream extends that hydration further with its own 4-Weight Hyaluronic Acid System and a Bio-Mimetic Lipid Barrier Complex, engineered to mirror skin's own lipid architecture - helping to lock in what the Serum delivers.
Hyaluronic acid has rightfully earned its place in a skincare routine - but for benefits that go beyond surface-level plumping, it's worth choosing a formulation engineered to work, and keep working, at more than one depth.
