What happens to skin as it ages?

What happens to skin as we age serves as a model for how time transforms human tissues. Skin ageing was previously thought to be inevitable.  However, it’s increasingly being viewed as something that is with the right treatment, addressable.

Skin cells called keratinocytes in the epidermis (the top layer of the skin) and fibroblasts of the thick, biologically active lower layer of the skin (the dermis) contain, within their nuclei, the blueprints for making healthy skin. Ageing happens when the blueprint is damaged and when the blueprint stops being read properly.

How the LYMA Laser transforms the appearance of skin

Part 1: Delivering cold near-infrared laser light at 808nm

The problem

Skin cells become less active. The speed at which cells make the ‘building blocks’ of healthy skin slows down and the rate these ‘building blocks’ are broken up speeds up. These ‘building blocks’ are also responsible for attracting water in the skin, therefore having fewer of them means the skin struggles to hold onto water and skin becomes less hydrated.

The LYMA solution

The LYMA Laser is engineered to deliver powerful Low-Level Laser Therapy at a frequency of 808nm. This cold, near infrared laser light penetrates deep beneath the skin’s surface. It doesn’t damage any cells as hot laser light would, it works by empowering the skin to produce more collagen and elastin. As more ‘building blocks’ are present, the skin is able to hold onto water and becomes more hydrated.

Part 2: Increased circulation delivers more nutrients to skin

The problem

The structure of healthy skin supports tiny blood vessels known as capillaries. A breakdown of this structure means that capillaries can no longer be supported, and the supply of blood (carrying oxygen and nutrients) is reduced, which leads to a further structural breakdown. This process is largely responsible for fine wrinkles. The immune system that recognises fine lines, other ‘faults’ in the skin and is responsible for repair in the skin starts to become less precise and more erratic.

The LYMA Solution

The science has shown that Low-Level Laser Therapy as engineered inside the LYMA Laser produces signals to increase circulation inside the skin, with more efficient oxygen and nutrient delivery. Skin is empowered - and visible changes on the skin's surface can be seen.

Part 3: Low-Level Laser Technology creates a smoother looking skin

The problem

As the skin loses its elasticity, it starts to hang loosely around muscles and tendons and deep wrinkles start to form. Less activity in the cells (keratinocytes) in the top layer of the skin (epidermis) causes it to thin and weaken its protective function. Some cells that have stopped to be biologically effective enter a state of “senescence”. These so called “zombie cells” prevent skin repair by encouraging the breakdown of the “building blocks”. As skin ages, the number of “zombie cells” increase, and the damage accelerates, the skin’s ageing process accelerates and skin looks older, with less elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles.

The LYMA Solution

Low-Level Laser Therapy as engineered inside the LYMA Laser and the LYMA Laser PRO encourages skin to look more dense, so the surface becomes smoother, firmer and more vibrant. With continued daily use, the effects start to snowball and benefits accumulate.

Non-fractional Laser vs LYMA

Non-fractional laser technology works by gently heating the water around skin cells to increase the temperature to between three and four degrees Celsius higher. This slight rise in temperature creates thermal damage to the skin cells in the hope that this will create collagen production. This stress damage approach to skin renewal is inferior to LYMA Laser technology which is the only zero-damage laser technology to biologically work inside your skin’s cells to deactivate the ageing process and create surplus collagen production completely naturally.

Unlike non-fractional lasers LYMA offers expansive treatment sizes, and a painless treatment time of from just 3 minutes each day.

Fractional Laser vs LYMA

So named for their ability to deliver both heat and light in a pixelated manner, fractional or fractionated lasers can be seen as a mid-way point between ablative and non-ablative laser treatments. Fractionated lasers ability to isolate the exact area of skin that requires treating has made them a popular choice in dermatologist offices because they're able to accurately pinpoint scars and pigmentation patches as well as fine lines and wrinkles. By far the most commonly used is the Fraxel that has two different wave-lengths for treating various skin conditions such as dullness, sun damage or fine lines.

The popularity of this laser puts it at risk of being misused by untrained technicians and the pain and discomfort during treatment may mean patients abandon the course before completion, therefore never achieving the results they were after. Also, there is a chance of aggressive breakouts due to high skin cell turnover and darker skin tones are at higher risk for developing excess scarring from collagen overproduction. Expected downtime is between 3 to 5 days.

Frequently asked questions

The  LYMA Laser uses powerful Low-Level Laser Therapy, recognised as the gold standard in photobiomodulation. Unlike traditional laser technology which relies on the stress/damage approach to skin regeneration, LYMA’s laser technology doesn’t rely on damaging skin in order to stimulate collagen production, which makes it safe for all skin types and tones. The device features a powerful 500mW near infrared cold laser, engineered to transform the skin on the face, neck and targeted areas of concern. In weeks, skin elasticity and fine lines and wrinkles are improved, pigmentation spots and redness reduced, and scars smoothed.

We recommend seeking advice from your Medical Practitioner before using the device over any areas associated with the following medical conditions, tumors, overactive thyroid, fungal skin infections, implanted pacemaker or melanoma.

It’s the concept of causing damage in order to stimulate collagen production that makes other cosmetic laser technologies unsuitable for people with Black and Brown skin. This is because the more melanin present in skin, the greater the risk of inflammation, scarring and hyperpigmentation, which can leave the skin with dark pigmentation spots.

As this is a zero-damage cosmetic laser technology, there is no risk of scarring to skin which makes it a safe cosmetic solution for all skin tones. This is what sets LYMA Laser technology apart from other cosmetic laser technology and a safe solution for people with Black and Brown skin.

With the LYMA Laser you get what you pay for – it’s the only device of its kind. The convenience of a powerful, clinic-grade cosmetic device, FDA cleared for home use.
