What Clinical Pharmacologist and Pharmaco-nutritionist Prof. Paul Clayton Wants You to Know About Inflammaging

The ultimate guide to inflammaging.

Professor Paul Clayton is a world-leading clinical pharmacologist and pharmaco-nutritionist obsessed with food, nutrition and health. He is also LYMA’s Director of Science and a leading authority on immunity and inflammation, as well as how both impact the ageing process.

Are you ageing before your time? Some common signs that you’re ageing too quickly include thinning hair and skin, brittle nails, the development of fine lines and wrinkles, the emergence of sunspots, frequent fractures or bone breakage, and impaired focus, concentration and memory.

Did you know that chronological age and biological age are not, in fact, the same? Prof. Paul Clayton has spent his time in recent years researching, writing and presenting on the subject of cellular ageing and he is not alone in his conclusion that some people age faster than others and, often, premature ageing is a result of inflammaging.

What is inflammaging? Why do some people age more quickly than others? What causes a person to succumb to premature ageing? Is biological age innate and inevitable, or can it be hacked and its set point changed over the course of a person’s life?

LYMA: Why do we age?

Prof. Paul Clayton: Ageing is chaotic. The machinery of a single cell is incredibly complicated, and the workings of the various anatomical and physiological systems even more so. There do appear to be, however, a small set of drivers that have a notable impact on ageing. These include decreasing telomere length, changing patterns of DNA methylation, reduced expression of RNA splicing factors, and mitochondrial obsolescence. This all sounds very technical, but really it just comes down to cells breaking down over time.

The two really interesting things about these drivers are that, firstly, the same drivers can be found across the animal and plant world: ageing in worms, yeast, fruit flies, fish, mice, monkeys and humans is triggered by the same set of biological changes over time. Secondly - and most vitally for those looking to turn back the clock - many of the drivers are mutable, ‘hackable’ and their course is able to be changed via lifestyle and nutritional intervention.

LYMA: Okay, so we want to slow down these drivers, what do we need to do?

Prof. Paul Clayton: Hacking the ageing process needs to start at a cellular level and involves altering gene expression. Gene expression can be modified in a few established ways, all of which contribute to a deceleration of the biological ageing process:

Fasting, inducing hypothermia and taking part in high intensity interval training (HIIT) can all help to rekindle biological youth. Furthermore, taking supplements containing curcumin and 1,3 1,6 beta glucans can support the body by reducing inflammation and rejuvenating the body at a cellular level.

Our Wellmune® Blend is one of the patented ingredients formulated in LYMA and is a standardised and validated 1,3 1,6 beta glucan that is a hero nutraceutical and a game-changer in terms of its anti-inflammaging potential.

LYMA also contains HydroCurc®, the world’s first 100% cold water dispersed curcumin that offers unrivalled protection against inflammaging. HydroCurc® is a peer-reviewed, specialised delivery format of curcumin, with up to four times the active benefits of generic turmeric.

LYMA: You mentioned ‘inflammaging’. Can you tell us more about that?

Prof. Paul Clayton: Inflammaging is a form of chronic low-grade inflammation that builds up over the course of your lifetime, speeding up the biological ageing process. Inflammaging can cause you to experience typically age-related ailments before your time; everything from the development of fine lines and wrinkles and brittle hair, through to memory impairment and bone weakness can be expedited by inflammaging.

Inflammaging is a consequence of long-term over-stimulation of the immune system that causes premature ageing of your body, your mind and your skin. Scientists have discovered that inflammaging is heavily implicated in other serious life-altering age-related diseases, such as cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

LYMA: Can this accumulation of cell damage over time be prevented?

Prof. Paul Clayton: Yes, there are steps you can take to protect yourself against inflammaging:

Anti-inflammatory supplements such as HydroCurc® and Sensoril® Ashwagandha in LYMA are great places to start. You’ll also need to make some changes to your lifestyle. Such changes include prioritising sleep and establishing a regular and specific exercise routine. Immunity-boosting supplements should also become a part of your routine and LYMA is the best choice because all the ingredients have been peer-reviewed and clinically proven to be effective at the dosage provided.

In addition to our Wellmune® Blend and HydroCurc®, LYMA contains Vita-algae D3 at a clinically-backed daily dose of 2,000 i.u. and MenaQ7® Matrix at 75μg: this is the absolute best combination for promoting immune health. LYMA also contains Sensoril® Ashwagandha. The world leading peer-reviewed adaptogen is an effective immunostimulant and anti-inflammatory and can help suppress inflammaging and protect against biological ageing.

Prevention is always better than cure, but there are some steps you can take to treat the symptoms of inflammaging and turn back the biological clock even if cellular ageing has already taken hold. Many of the tactics here are similar to the preventative ones. For example, anti-ageing supplements can be useful for treating inflammaging, as can incorporating anti-ageing specific exercises into your workout routine.

Furthermore, whilst supplements and exercise are great for turning back your internal biological clock, investing in an at-home cosmetic laser protocol, such as the LYMA System, can be an effective way to treat visible signs of premature ageing such as wrinkles, fine lines, sagging skin and cellulite.

Inspired by the insight and wisdom of Prof. Paul we’ve put together a four week plan to help you to slow the ageing process right down, and to turn back your biological clock. By incorporating both the LYMA Formula and the LYMA System into your daily routine, along with specific movement practices and optimised nutrition, your body and mind will be primed for renewal, regeneration and rejuvenation. It’s time to regain that winning feeling.

Always consult your medical professional if you have a medical condition, or existing health protocol, before beginning any new supplementation regime.
